SOSUNS Athletes Farewell World Games team at Roosters Match

Despite the rain and cold weather SOSUNS athletes starred at the recent Special Olympics sports exhibition and torch run held before and during half time of the Roosters rugby league match. The Roosters Rugby League Club have recently come on board as supporters and sponsor of Special Olympics Australia and invited 1000 athletes and friends to come and watch their match, show the crowd their great sporting skills and partcipate in a half time torch run held to farewell the NSW athletes heading off to Athens for the World Games.
SOSUNS athletes skidded excitedly around the field playing soccer against Central Coast athletes. Our athletes had a great if not muddy time and the cheers from the crowd showed their appreciation of the efforts of the athletes.
At half time SOSUNS athletes excitedly gathered in the tunnel where they then ran around the oval with the torch and World Games athletes before standing proudly behind the SOSUNS banner.
Our very own SOSUNS world games representatives, Mel Eustace, Harry Langford and Andrew Mujunen were very happy to be officially presented with their Australian tracksuits. We at SOSUNS all wish them the best of luck as they play softball at the world games and also hope that they have a brilliant experience.

Special Olympics Upper North Shore does not currently run it’s own athletics training. All of the local Little Athletics Associations in the Upper North Shore Region happily accept registrations for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Parents are however, asked to supervise and help their child each week.
Athletes who participate in weekly Little Athletics training are eligible to participate in all Special Olympic Regional and State competitions provided that they are registered with Special Olympics.

At the recent SONSW State Athletics Carnival Nathaniel Quan and Mathew Phelan had a fantastic day demonstrating their allround athletic skills. From running races to throwing and jumping events the athletes enjoyed competing against their Special Olympics friends.
Nathaniel won silver in the 4 x 100m relay race, silver in the long jump, bronze in the 200m, bronze in the 400m and 5th place in the 100m.
Mathew, aged only ten and a newcomer to athletics, won gold in the softball throw, gold in the standing long jump, silver in the 50m run and bronze in the 100m run.
The parents of both athletes emphasised how much they enjoy the thrill of competing and making new friends at the carnivals. “Mathew’s self esteem really receives a boost as he returns home from a carnival where he has spent the day competing in an atmosphere of acceptance and fun,” says Paul, Mathew’s Dad.
SOSUNS encourages all parents and athletes to keep an eye out for the carnivals being held most weekends and GET INVOLVED! Carnivals cater for athletes of ALL abilities!
