A Sad Farewell to Brilliant Basketball Coaches
December 15, 2011 by deb · Leave a Comment
SOSUNS Thornleigh and North Sydney basketball groups have recently celebrated a great year with parties enjoyed by athlete and coaches.
Sadly, after two years of coaching, Hugh, Lachie, Paddy and Sophie are heading off to travel the world and will therefore not be able to continue coaching at North Sydney next year. Sports Coordintaor, Tina, responded to this news from the coaches saying, “The coaches have been such a positive influence on our kids! Their enthusiasm, positive vibe, kindness and skill in not just showing the kids how to play the game but also effectively communicating how it is all done has been brilliant.”
Hugh reflected on his enjoyment of the last two years, “We thank you for giving us the opportunity to coach such great people. In trusting us you have made the journey a very special one for us all.”
Fortunately we look forward to another fantastic year of basketball as Thornleigh coaches Rod, Josh, Nick and Jeremy and North Sydney coaches Chris and Nick can continue and even bring along some friends to join the coaching team.
SOSUNS Basketballers Host the Sydney Kings

Recently the SOSUNS basketballers were thrilled to have two Sydney Kings players attend their Sunday training session. Organised by coaches Paddy and Lachy the players, Taj McCullough and Junian Khazzouh, taught SOSUNS athletes some cool new moves and participated in a fun game where they showed off some of their great skills.
The two SOSUNS basketball groups, one of which trains at Thornleigh Brickpit and the other at North Sydney Indoor Sports Centre have been enjoying some great social get togethers this year. They meet up for their regular Sunday training session at one of the centres and follow this up with a pizza session where all players, parents and coaches can continue the fun.
If you are interested in helping to coach the Thornleigh group please contact Deb Frost on 0424 403 065.

Mike ‘The Mean Machine’ and Shane ‘Everready Bunny’ Take on the Basketball
May 18, 2010 by deb · Leave a Comment
Michael ‘The Mean Machine’ Karseboom and Shane ‘Everready Bunny’ Doowage had the privilege of participating in their first Special Olympic National Games as members of the awesome NSW mixed basketball team. These enthusiastic athletes played with enjoyment, tenacity and sportsmanship in true Special Olympic spirit, never giving up against more experienced teams.
Eventually their dedication was rewarded as they won their last game of the tournament with amazing teamwork and supportive coaches cheering them on from the sideline. The athletes deservedly felt like champions and their elation at winning was unbelievable.
The team was placed sixth and Mike was the highest goal scorer for almost every match.
But winning isn’t everything. When Mike was asked what was the best part of his week he answered that it was “…meeting Aaron my coach, making so many new friends and having the most fun I have ever had!!”
Our tallest SOSUNS athlete, Jackson Fennell, was a member of the open men’s team. This team rewarded loyal supporters with a breathtakingly close game in the bronze medal playoff match against Queensland. With minutes to go NSW were 10 points up but Queensland were not finished yet and played well to win by 2 points. It was an exciting match talked about right through the athlete camp.
