Run With the Law Underway
April 6, 2010 by deb
The excitement of SOSUNS athletes was obvious by the big smiles on their faces as they gathered together, ready to participate in the 2010 Run With the Law. Nathaniel stood calm and proud, excited to see one of his heroes, footballer Craig Wing, Michael and Brandon were excited, ready to take their turn with the torch, James had the honour of actually holding the torch whilst it was being lit, Ryan, Sophie, James, Bec and Ashley all chatted and laughed, impatient for this once in a lifetime experience to begin, Lauren carried the NSW State flag high and Shaun and Mel high fived and cheered their way along the course.
SOSUNS athletes met at one of two local run routes. Some chose to start their run from the Opera House, ending 4.3km later at the SCG. The athletes gathered together with their families, friends, supporters and police on the steps of the Opera House, drinking the moment in, excited that their time to run proudly with the flame had arrived.
Other SOSUNS athletes chose to experience the 3.9km route around Sydney Olympic Park, culminating in the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron. The significance in seeing the flame arrive at the Cauldron was indescribable as athletes truly felt themselves worthy of such recognition.
Some walked or ran the entire distance, others only part of it, but all of the athletes shared in the pride of being identified as belonging to the great Australian sporting tradition, something which has been made possible by Special Olympics.

Shaun Bender had a great day! Not only did he get to meet Craig Wing, Peter Overton, etc, he actually ran the entire 4.3kms from the Opera House to The Sydney Cricket Ground and hold the Torch as well. He surprised himself as well as his parents.
What a great day it was!! Bring on the Games!!
