SOSUNS Athletes Have Great Fun at San Fun Run

November 10, 2009 by deb

Despite forecasts for a stormy Sunday morning in Sydney four brave SOSUNS athletes set aside thoughts of a sleep in and bacon and eggs for breakfast and headed off bright and early to participate in the annual San Hospital Fun Run.  Kate, Michael, Lucy and Jack excitedly met and prepared for the race with jokes, laughs and a good catchup.

Ready! Set! And with the sound of the starters gun Jack sprinted off for the 5km run  with his family behind him, gallantly trying to keep up.  Then it was the turn of the walkers.  Lucy, Michael and Kate lined up with some excited supporters and an energetic Charlie the dog, ready to beat all before them in the 5km walk.  Hold on??  Was that the starters gun??  Everyone was having such a good time that we forgot to time our stroll perfectly.  Fortunately we were all looking forward to a great chat so it really didn’t matter where we came and so of we set, legs pumping pretty slowly really, determined to complete the 5km without requiring a lift up any of the big hills.

It was a great atmosphere as we proudly walked amongst a record number of competitiors showing off our SOSUNS shirts - definitely best dressed!!!  Thank goodness for Lucy as without her Deb and Paul would have faltered on at least one of the never ending number of hills.  Michael was an inspiration as he strode ahead effortlessly.  Obviously all those sessions of basketball have led to a great fitness level.  Kate enjoyed the company of Charlie (oh and Mum and Dad too) as she too confidently strode forward.  We were all inspired by the young girl in the wheelchair working hard to get up the hills and then wizzing past us down the other side with a triumphant smile.

Halfway through our walk we saw Jack again as with a big grin on his face he sprinted towards the finish line.  Before long it was the turn of the walkers too and feeling very proud we all crossed that line, looking forward to a delicious and much deserved breakfast.
