SOSUNS Athletes Enjoy Holiday Activities

April 28, 2009 by deb

SOSUNS athletes, their families and friends had a fantastic time over the Easter school holidays as they were kept very busy attending a variety of fun activities.  The friendships formed by SOSUNS athletes are a highlight of the Special Olympics experience and these holiday activities allowed athletes to meet with their friends and have loads of fun.

Athletes were happy to have their holidays filled with friends, sports and movies.  Approximately 50 athletes and 30 family and friends participated in some of the 8 organised activities.  Ten pin bowling, movies, tennis and action indoor sports were all voted fantastic fun by all athletes!

Ten pin bowling wasa highlight as George celebrated his 15th birthday with all of his SOSUNS friends and a delicious cake to share.  All of the boys were good sports as Kate smashed them with strike after strike.   One of the groups were having so much fun that the parents decided to organise their own tournament, won handsomely by Cate - and no it wasn’t rigged!

Nick’s favourite activity was tennis as he loved the variety provided by Mark, our wonderful coach.  Laura was still talking about her great tennis day a week later and much to the delight of parents all athletes arrived home happily exhausted after their tennis session.

SOSUNS invaded Thornleigh Action Indoor Sports for the first time where they enjoyed indoor soccer, dodgeball, volleyball and newcomball.  Two hours of nonstop sports was enjoyed by everybody while the parents had nice break and chat.

SOSUNS also invaded the Hornsby Odeon Cinema for two separate sessions where athletes loved the independence of watching a movie with their friends while they were unobtrusively supervised by a small number of volunteer parents.

Thanks very much to Cate and Deb who organised the activities.  Thanks also to all those parents who stayed at activities to help supervise the athletes.  It would be great to make holiday activities for SOSUNS athletes a regular school holiday event however Cate and Deb do need help.  If you would be prepared to organise and run an activity or have some ideas for activities for the July school holidays please register now by emailing Deb on debfrost@bigpond.net.au
