Lucy and Nalyn Love Volunteering with SOSUNS

April 6, 2009 by deb

Special Olympics Sydney Upper North Shore aims to offer sporting opportunties to children and adults with intellectual disabilities.  It would be impossible to reach as many athletes as we do without the help of our wonderful volunteers.  Two of our SOSUNS athletes are also amongst our best volunteers.

Lucy and Nalyn currently volunteer each week with the SOSUNS school program.   Both girls volunteer at St Lucy’s and St Edmund’s and Nalyn also helps at Karonga Special School.

Nalyn says that she “..loves to volunteer and get to know the kids.”  Nalyn especially loves helping the smaller children and also has a soft spot for the “wheelies”, especially “Scottie at Karonga who shows a lot of happiness…” when he sees her every week.

Nalyn participates in the SOSUNS tennis program each week where she appreciates her “..good looking coach..”  When Nalyn is not busy with Special Olympics she is studying for a Hospitality Course at TAFE , loves watching the football and plays netball.

Lucy also loves getting to know the kids that she helps each week especially pretending to be the little ones “mum”.  Both girls love working with the SOSUNS coaches, Cathy and Ivy with Lucy particularly enjoying communicating with them each week “…about the program and what I did on the weekend.”

Lucy is a very fit young woman who is heavily involved in many sports.  With SOSUNS Lucy swims, dances, plays golf and is the only girl on the soccer team which recently came second at the State carnival.  in addition to Special Olympics Lucy competes in triathlons, plays netball and attends TAFE where she is completing a course in Office Practice, Computing Skills and Retail.

Lucy also loves ABBA and has seen the movie Mamma Mia at “..least 10 times.”  If singing ABBA songs was a Special Olympics sport Lucy would definitely win gold.
