Basketballers Win Special Olympic Gold

The atmosphere was electric with excitement and anticipation as the SOSUNS basketball team began their campaign for gold at the recent State Basketball Championships held in Newcastle.   Held over two days the team played and won all three of their round matches on Saturday.  

Coaches Glen and Rod were impressed with the improvement shown by all players, making it very difficult to decide on a starting lineup for the grand final on Sunday.  The five chosen players took to the court and determinedly established a great lead over a strong Central Coast team.  All 11 SOSUNS players contributed to the team making the grand final and of course all 11 players had playtime in the grand final.  The early lead was maintained through the match and a jubilant SOSUNS team, coaches and fans celebrated their win of the gold medal.

 

 

 

Great attacking by Joshua, Michael and Shane who showed tenacious court work, passing skills and basket scoring ability.  Leading goal scorer was Josh who was not afraid to take on much bigger players and run the ball up the whole court. 

 

Lachlan and Chris were key defenders with Chris also scoring his first basket in a tournament.  Tom, Micah and Andrew contributed to the gold medal win by scoring some great baskets from under the post.  Jim was valuable in both defense and attack.  Biggest improvers were Bowman in both defense and attack and Willis who was playing his first tournament.

 

All SOSUNS basketballers showed great sportsmanship cheering and encouraging each other at all times.  Family, fans and the team’s two brilliant coaches Road and Matthew all had a great time watching the team’s display of improved skills and excitement and joy at their success.  All players are now very keen to continue training to further improve their skills so as to defend their title at the next games.
