Sophie Wins Young Achiever Award
March 3, 2009 by deb
Sophie Ferguson was “nervous” and “proud” as she walked on to the stage to collect the Hornsby Advocate’s inaugural Young Achiever award. Sophie was nominated by a family friend to be the Advocate’s sports star of the week after wining two gold medals and a silver medal for swimming and a bronze medal for basketball at the Special Olympics National Youth games held in Canberra last year.
Competing for the award against all of the other talented sportstars of the week during 2008, Sophie was extremely honoured when notified that she was a finalist. To then attend the dinner and hear her name read out as the winner was a truly amazing and exciting moment!
Sophie has been participating in Special Olympics since starting t-ball 2 years ago. Since then Sophie has expanded her sporting interests to include dance, tennis, basketball and swimming. Since joining Special Olympics Sophie has achieved great success. She has met many new friends and grown personally from the interaction with her sporting buddies as well as the new skills she has learnt.
